Software and Hardware Requirements

  1. A PC with Intel® Pentium®/Celeron®/Xeon™, AMD K6/Athlon™/Duron™/Sempron™ or compatible processor (500 MHz or higher).
  2. Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, Microsoft® Windows® XP, Microsoft® Windows® 2000. (To work with localized interfaces, corresponding language support is required.)
  3. Memory: 128 MB RAM. In a multiprocessor system, an additional 16MB of RAM is required for each additional processor.
  4. Hard disk space: 250MB for typical program installation and 100MB for program operation
  5. A TWAIN–compatible scanner, digital camera or fax–modem
  6. A video card and monitor (min. resolution 800×600)
  7. A keyboard, mouse or other pointing device

Installation on a Network Server and on a Network Workstation

Installation of ABBYY FineReader 8.0 Corporate Edition on a network server can only be carried out by the system administrator. The installation consists of two stages. First, the program is installed on the server. From the server the program can be installed on workstations using one of the four methods:

To install ABBYY FineReader 8.0 Corporate Edition on the server:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Run AdminSetup.exe from the ABBYY FineReader CD-ROM.

For more information about installing ABBYY FineReader on workstations, working with the License Manager, and working with the program in a local area network, please refer to the "System Administrator's Guide" which can be found in the Administrator's Guide folder on the ABBYY FineReader CD-ROM.

Using user dictionaries from previous ABBYY FineReader versions

How to use user dictionaries of ABBYY FineReader 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 or 7.0 in ABBYY FineReader 8.0.

  1. Uninstall ABBYY FineReader 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 or 7.0.
  2. Install ABBYY FineReader 8.0.
  3. Run ABBYY FineReader 8.0 from the Start button menu.
  4. Select the View dictionaries item in the Tools menu.
  5. In the Select dictionary dialog select the necessary dictionary and click the View button. A dialog will open. Click the Import button. The dictionaries you can import to ABBYY FineReader 8.0 are located in the catalog where previous version of ABBYY FineReader was installed in the /Language folder and have the .pmd extension. Select the necessary dictionary and click the Open button.

How to use user dictionaries of ABBYY FineReader 5.0, 6.0 or 7.0 not uninstalling it.

  1. Run ABBYY FineReader 5.0 or 6.0 from the Start button menu.
  2. Click the View dictionaries button on the Check Spelling tab (Tools>Options).
  3. In the Select dictionary dialog select the necessary dictionary and click the View button. A dialog will open. Click the Export button and save the dictionary as Portable Morphological Dictionary.
  4. Install ABBYY FineReader 8.0.
  5. Run ABBYY FineReader 8.0 from the Start button menu.
  6. Select the View dictionaries item in the Tools menu.
  7. In the Select dictionary dialog select the necessary dictionary and click the View button. A dialog will open. Click the Import button and enter the path to your saved dictionaries. Select the necessary dictionary and click the Open button.

Using patterns from previous ABBYY FineReader versions

If user patterns were created in ABBYY FineReader 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 or 7.0, you may use them in ABBYY FineReader 8.0:

Upgrade version

A previous version of ABBYY FineReader must be installed on your computer before installing the upgrade-version of ABBYY FineReader 8.0. That is why it is recommended to uninstall the previous version only when ABBYY FineReader 8.0 installation is over. If you have already uninstalled your previous version of ABBYY FineReader, you should type in its serial number while installing ABBYY FineReader 8.0.

How to embed ABBYY FineReader icon into Microsoft Word toolbar manually

If ABBYY FineReader Setup failed to embed the ABBYY FineReader icon into Microsoft Word toolbar, you can do the following:

If Microsoft Office 2003 was installed after ABBYY FineReader had been installed, to make Zoom available in Microsoft Word, please copy the file FineReader8.2003.dot into Startup folder of Microsoft Word.

To locate the Startup folder:

  1. Run Microsoft Word. 
  2. On the Tools  menu, select Options>File Locations
  3. Double-click Startup in the File types list. 
  4. In the dialog box that opens, in the Folder name field you will see the path to the Startup folder. 

Important! ABBYY FineReader 8.0 supports the use of the XML format only in conjunction with Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003. For this reason, the ABBYY FineReader XML Zoom feature is not available in Office Small Business Edition 2003, Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003, and Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003. If you wish to use ABBYY FineReader XML Zoom, make sure that you have Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 installed on your system.

User templates are located in a batch and have the .ptn extension.

User dictionaries have the .ame extension and are located  in %userprofile%\Application Data\ABBYY\FineReader\8.00\UserDictionaries.

Scanlog.txt is located in  %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\ABBYY\ScanManager\8.00

Armenian characters

To see all dialogs in the proper way in ABBYY FineReader you need fonts supporting all Armenian characters to be installed on your computer.

If the Sylfaen font is installed on your computer then you need to run Sylfaen.reg program. You can find this program in the \Support folder in the ABBYY FineReader installation folder.

If you have any other fonts supporting all Armenian characters (for example, Arial Unicode MS, Arial AMU) you need to attach this font. To do it, Run regedit.exe from the folder where the operation system was installed. In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ABBYY\FineReader\8.00 create new key Fonts, add a new string value ControlFontName and as a value of this string set the font name (the Value data field).

XML Format

Important!
The XML format is supported by Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 only, therefore the ABBYY FineReader XML Zoom function cannot be used in Office Small Business Edition 2003, Microsoft Office Standart Edition 2003, Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003. In order to use ABBYY FineReader XML Zoom you must have Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 installed on your computer.
