IMPORTANT: REGISTRATION
************************************
Please complete your registration card and mail it today or use the online registration software provided with Adobe Premiere to register your copy. You must register to receive technical support and important product update information. You must be logged-in as Administrator to install Premiere 6 under Windows 2000 Professional and Windows NT.

***********************
SERIAL NUMBERS
***********************
If this is your first version of Premiere, you can find the serial number on the registration card, or on your CD holder. Be sure to safeguard your serial number. Inside the User Guide would be a good place to make a backup copy of your serial number listed on your registration card. Use this number to install the program. This serial number will also be used to upgrade to future versions of Premiere.

If you upgraded from Premiere LE, you should have received a new serial number on the registration card. Your Premiere LE serial number will not work in the full version.

If you upgraded from a previous full version of Premiere, use the same serial number provided with your original version of Premiere. There is no other serial number provided in the Premiere upgrade package.

If your serial number does not work or you cannot locate your original serial number, please contact Adobe Customer Support.

INSTALLATION NOTES
****************************
For best results, exit all programs and disable all utilities such as virus scanners. When other software is running, it may interfere with the installation process.

You can hold down the Control key during startup to temporarily prevent software in the Startup folder from starting. For information on deactivating other software, see the documentation that came with the software.

If you have problems installing from a network server, copy the Premiere installer folder to the computer on which you are trying to install, and then run the installer from there.

You must be logged-in as Administrator to install Premiere 6 under Windows 2000 Professional and Windows NT.

*************************************
THIRD PARTY COMPONENTS
*************************************
Adobe Premiere relies on several third party components to work with digital video. The following third party components are included on the Premiere CD and are part of the Premiere installation.

MICROSOFT DIRECTX MEDIA
Adobe Premiere 6.0 automatically installs DirectX 8.0. Microsoft’s updated DirectX Media has important fixes and additional functionality for Microsoft DirectShow, Media Player, and OHCI support.

APPLE QUICKTIME 4.1.2
Adobe Premiere 6.0 automatically installs QuickTime 4.1.2 as part of its default installation. This is the required version for working with
Premiere 6.

When the QuickTime installation is complete, it will ask you whether you want to view the README and the sample QuickTime movie. We recommend that you leave these deselected and continue with the Premiere installation until it has successfully finished. You can view the README and sample QuickTime movie after installation; they are available in the QuickTime folder.

You can have multiple versions of QuickTime installed on your system at the same time, so there is no need to remove earlier versions of QuickTime. If you do need to uninstall QuickTime you can run its uninstaller should you wish to remove it at some point after installing it. However, you will need to remove or rename the file QUICKTIME.QTS yourself. You will find this file in the System or System32 folder inside your Windows folder.

QuickTime Pro 4.1 is a version of QuickTime 4.1 that contains additional useful features that are available in Apple's MoviePlayer. Although QuickTime Pro doesn't add any functionality to Premiere, it is compatible with Premiere. QuickTime Pro 4.1 is available from Apple Computer and is not included with Premiere.

WINDOWS MEDIA STREAMING WEB EXPORT
Windows Media Export Plug-in is automatically installed as part of the default installation.

Windows Media Export is used to generate video for playback using Windows Media Player and other applications (including Premiere).

When you select File > Export Timeline > Advanced Windows Media, you are accessing Windows Media Export and are no longer working within Premiere. In the Windows Media Export settings window, click on the Help button for instructions or on the About button for support and troubleshooting information.

MEDIA CLEANER WEB EXPORT FILES
Terran Interactive's Cleaner 5 EZ software is automatically installed as part of the default installation.

Cleaner 5 EZ is used to output QuickTime Streaming, QuickTime Progressive Download, RealG2 Web Download, RealG2 Streaming, Windows Media (audio and video), AVI CD-ROM, MPEG1, and MP3 audio format.

When you select File > Export Timeline > Save for Web, you are accessing the Cleaner 5 EZ application and are no longer working within Premiere. For instructions on using and troubleshooting, click on the Learn More button in the Cleaner 5 EZ settings window to access Terran Interactive Cleaner 5 EZ for Premiere Web site.

REAL MEDIA EXPORT FILES
Advanced RealMedia Export is automatically installed as part of the default installation.

Advanced RealMedia Export is used to output RealMedia files (containing both RealVideo and RealAudio).

When you select File > Export Timeline > Advanced RealMedia Export, you are accessing RealMedia Export and are no longer working within Premiere. To access the RealMedia Export User's Guide, click on the Help button in the Advanced RealMedia Export settings window.

If uninstalling both Premiere and RealMedia Export, uninstall RealMedia Export before uninstalling Premiere.

On Windows NT SP6 you will need to have Internet Explorer 4 or later installed

SONIC DESKTOP SMARTSOUND QUICKTRACKS
SmartSound ignores Project Audio Rate and Format settings, only creates 44.1kHz 16bit stereo audio clips. This is a problem since Enhance Rate conversion is off when DV presets are used while DV mainly uses 32kHz and 48kHz Audio Sample Rates. To optimize quality when exporting audio to DV change the conversion rate to that used in your DV project.

CERTIFIED CAPTURE CARD DRIVERS
**************************************************
Please confirm whether your capture card is certified with Adobe Premiere 6.0. Many third parties have updated their drivers for 6.0 and
compatibility testing is ongoing. You can refer to Adobe Systems Inc.'s list of certified capture cards that have been tested with Adobe Premiere
6.0 at: http://www.adobe.com/premiere/. This list will be updated as additional capture cards are certified.

To simplify working with third-party capture cards, details about using the card with Premiere, troubleshooting known issues, and finding additional
resources for certified capture cards are now available on the capture card compatibility page.

Many capture cards are still being tested. If your capture card is not listed, please check the web page regularly to note whether it has been
added to the Certified or Unsupported section.

**********************************************************************************
PINNACLE SYSTEMS TITLEDEKO AND INSCRIBER TITLEEXPRESS
**********************************************************************************
If your capture board already uses a version of Pinnacle TitleDeko or Inscriber TitleExpress, then using their supplied version may prevent compatibility problems.

*******************************************
IEEE 1394 COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
*******************************************
Premiere's built-in DV support requires that the Microsoft driver for your OHCI compatible card is used. Please check the Microsoft 1394 compatibility list at:
http://www.microsoft.com/hcl

The Microsoft class drivers cannot coexist with third-party class drivers, such as the Sony class drivers and Texas Instruments class drivers.

To determine if your current configuration is compatible with Premiere's built-in DV support, see the IEEE 1394 Compatibility Info document available from Start > Programs > Adobe > Premiere 6.0 > 1394 Troubleshooting Guide.

ADOBE ONLINE
*******************
The most up-to-date information about Premiere is available from the Adobe Web site in the United States. To connect, choose Adobe Online (AOL) from Premiere's Help menu. Within the dialog box are hot spots that can launch your Web browser and take you to specific locations on the Adobe Web site where you will be able to access product-specific support, file updates, tips and more.

Using the Adobe Online feature requires an Internet connection capable of accessing the World Wide Web and a Web browser application such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Note: On Windows 2000 only; AOL can only be used when working with Premiere under Administrator privileges.

You can also visit Adobe Premiere’s main web site at http://www.adobe.com/premiere

DOCUMENTATION CORRECTIONS
*******************************************
The following keyboard shortcuts in the Quick Reference Card are incorrect:

- Alt + clicking Play button = "Play from preroll to postroll" should
be:
Ctrl + clicking Play button = "Play from preroll to postroll"

The following keyboard shortcuts do not work with clips that have been Linked:
- Cmd + Shift + Up Arrow = "Go to First Clip Marker"
- Cmd + Shift + Down Arrow = "Go to Last Clip Marker"

**************************
TROUBLESHOOTING
**************************

HOW DO I RESET PREMIERE’S DEFAULT SETTINGS?
To reset Premiere to its default settings hold the Control + Shift keys while launching Premiere or delete the Prem60.prf file found in the Premiere folder.

REDRAW PROBLEMS IN WINDOWS AND PALETTES
If windows and palettes are not redrawing correctly, check to make sure they do not overlap the Source or Program view in the Monitor window, or Clip windows. You can hide or show all palettes by pressing Tab; this may help you keep palettes and windows from overlapping at lower monitor resolutions.

CAN'T DRAG CLIP TO SAME TIME POSITION ON ANOTHER TRACK
You may not be able to drag a clip to the same time position on another track if the clip is linked to audio and the Video 1 track is collapsed. There are two ways to override this behavior:
- Hold down the Control key as you drag.
- Click the triangle to the left of the Video 1 track name, and then drag the clip.

********************
KNOWN ISSUES
********************
After Effects Filters:
Some After Effects Filters work best on clips on tracks Video 2 and greater (superimposition 32-bit tracks) since Effects Filters always work in 32-bit color space.

Audio:
In the Audio Clip window, when you open an audio clip with previously edited in/out points, the clip shows its whole length with in/out points correctly set.

When you set numbered markers in a video-only clip and an audio-only clip you will have to hide the waveform before you activate the snap clip markers to edges (blue arrow)

Audio Mixer:
Audio Mixer Audio Track Volume and Pan controls do not function when selecting "Ignore Audio Rubber Bands" in the Project Settings Keyframe and Rendering dialog.

Batch Capture:
Automatic file naming can only accommodate nine clips unless additional zeros are added to file name, e.g., clip1.avi, clip2.avi, clip3.avi, etc, will only allow nine files, while clip001.avi will permit up 999 automatically captured/named clips.

Clip comments made in the batch list will show up in the Project window after the clip has been captured. To see these comments the "Log Comment" Field in the Project Window Options should be checked.

When starting to capture a batch list, Premiere prescans the list. When capturing many clips, e.g., several hundred, it may take as long as 30 seconds. Premiere may appear frozen during this time, but capture will begin after the scan is complete.

Batch Processing:
Batch Processing is not supported by Third-party Export components, i.e., Windows Media Export, Media Cleaner Web Export, and RealMedia Export.

Clip Information:
When you add clips directly to the Timeline, either by dragging them from an external bin or from a Storyboard, information that has been added to the Notes field will not be retained. To retain clip comments added in an external bin or Storyboard, add the clips to the Project window then the Timeline.

Analog (or DV) Capture:
Timecode is not recorded when performing a manual analog or manual DV capture. Instead, to record timecode, use Batch Capture or Auto Capture.

Batch lists created in 6.0 are not cross platform

Files captured using Windows DV will not be compatible on the Macintosh

When seeking frames during capture be sure to press 'stop' or 'esc' before closing the Movie Capture window.

DV Support:
Device Control settings for Preroll Time and Timecode Offset have no effect when capture format is set to DV/IEEE 1394 capture. Instead, set your in and out points to include additional frames as necessary.

Fast Play:
To play a video or audio clip back at double-speed, press "L" multiple times. The play button will only allow you to play at normal speed.

Inscriber and Title Deko:
If you have a version of Inscriber or Title Deko that came with your capture card, you are recommended to continue to use that version and not install the version on the Premiere 6 CD-ROM. Hardware bundles of Inscriber and Title Deko are frequently customized for the capture card and may be the only version that will work correctly with your hardware.

Project Trimmer:
Do not use "Copy Trimmed Source Files" when Project trimming DV/PAL clips (which will create DV/NTSC trimmed clips instead of PAL). Instead, use the created Trimmed Batch List to correctly redigitize the clips.

Do not run Project Trimmer on a Premiere 5.x project if you want to reopen the project in Premiere 5.x. Always save a copy first. Project Trimmer will automatically convert the project to a Premiere 6 version, which is not backward compatible.

RealMedia Export:
The progress bar may be inaccurate when exporting a workspace. Your rendered output will be fine.

Save for Web using Cleaner 5:
Exporting audio only clips using Cleaner 5 from the Source monitor or Clip window may take a long time to complete, and the Cleaner 5 interface may appear frozen. Exporting the audio only clip from the Timeline does not have this issue.

Setting Clip Duration:
When setting clip duration in the Monitor window, dragging the View In or Out points to a new location may be off by a frame or two. Instead, use the Mark In and Mark Out tools for precise accuracy.

Speed Changes:
Reverse and negative speed playback does not work in the Clip or Monitor Source window. Instead, preview the clip in the Timeline.

Split Edits:
Split edits, also known as "J" cuts and "L" cuts, where the video and audio have different in/out points in a single clip, have the following limitations:

- "J" or "L" cuts are only supported in the Source Monitor window. The Clip window does not use "J" or "L" cuts.
- The Storyboard window cannot correctly add split edits to the Timeline
- Ripple Edits cannot be done with split edits.

Storyboard:
If you copy/paste a clip in the Storyboard window and edit the copy, changes are made to the original as well as the copy. To avoid this, Import an original version of the clip to the Storyboard for editing.

Tools
Rolling and Slide Edit tools are not available in A/B mode
The slide tool only works on adjacent clips, and when in single track mode a/b are considered 1 track so checkerboarded clips are adjacent. In A/B mode they are not adjacent.

Undo
Please note that a few actions are slow to undo. The progress bar may move slowly, but the undo command will complete successfully

Windows Media Export:
Some Windows Media encoding profiles don't work as expected.
The Microsoft Windows Media Export Plug-in for Adobe Premiere, which is installed with Adobe Premiere 6, lists the profiles that are installed in the \Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles directory. The Windows Media Encoder application, when installed on the same computer, will add profiles to the profile list in the Export Plug-in. The following profiles should only be used with Windows Media Encoder, not with the Export Plug-in:

High motion video for broadband NTSC (1500 Kbps total)
High motion video for broadband NTSC (384 Kbps)
High motion video for broadband NTSC (768 Kbps)

For more information about Windows Media Encoder please see the Windows Media page at the Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia..
