Man Page
- Manual pages are on-line references that are available as part of the Solaris
computing environment.
Master Device
- A master device is that part of the trans metadevice that contains the file
system being logged.
Media Database
- Media database contains information on the volumes where the backed up files
are stored.
Metadevice
- In the Solstice(R) DiskSuite(R) software a virtual disk
is called a metadevice. A metadevice is functionally identical to a physical
disk in the view of an application. The Solstice DiskSuite software's
metadevices are built from slices.
Media Interlace
- The interlace value is the number of blocks on a component of a striped or
RAID 5 metadevice, that can be accessed simultaneously with the same number of
blocks from other components. In other words, the interlace value tells the
Solstice DiskSuite software how much data to place on a component before moving
on to the next component.
Metadisk Driver
- Metadisk driver is a special device driver used by the Solstice DiskSuite
software to coordinate input/output (I/O) to and from physical devices and
metadevices. These drivers enable applications to treat a metadevice like a
physical device. This type of driver is also called a logical or pseudo
driver.
Mirror
- Disk mirroring is a feature used to guard against component failure by
writing the same data to two or more disk drives at the same time.
Modem
- Short for modulator-demodulator, a modem is a data communications equipment
(DCE)
device that translates (or modulates) information into signals that can be
transmitted across phone lines. The signal is demodulated on the receiving end.
mount
- The mount command logically attaches a file system, either local or
remote, to the file system hierarchy.
Mount Point
- A mount point is a directory in a file hierarchy at which a mounted file
system is logically attached.
mountall
- The mountall command is used to mount the file systems specified in
a file system table. The file system table must be in a vfstab format.
mt
- The magnetic tape control command sends commands directly to the tape drive. mt
may be used to rewind, erase, and skip files on a tape device along with
smoothing out tape tension (the retension option).
Multitasking
- Multitasking is a feature of the Solaris computing environment that enables
more than one tool or application to be used at a time. Multitasking enables the
kernel to keep track of several processes simultaneously.
Multiuser
- Multiuser is a feature of the Solaris computing environment that enables more
than one user to access the same system resources.
Multivolume Backup
- A multivolume backup is one where the data to be copied requires more than
one tape cartridge or diskette.
