The Cisco 700 series has
industry-standard networking features designed to enhance
interoperability, starting with PPP protocol support. Multilevel
authentication using Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol
(CHAP) and Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) are supported. PPP
dialback security is available to control router access.
B-channel aggregation is supported with industry-standard MLP.
All
Cisco 700 series routers support MLP, which aggregates both B
channels, providing up to 128 Kbps of ISDN bandwidth.
Cisco 700 series routers also support data
compression that is compatible with the Cisco IOS software, with a
compression ratio of up to 4:1. When MLP is combined with a 4:1
compression ratio, an aggregate throughput of up to 512 Kbps is
possible. The Cisco 700 series does not include data compression;
this capability can be added via software by ordering the Standard
Feature Set.
Access lists provide packet filtering for
bridging and routing.
Cisco 700 series routers can function as a
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) relay agent or DHCP
server. When configured, Cisco 700 series routers will relay DHCP
requests and responses between DHCP clients and a specified DHCP
server. In addition, Port Address Translation (PAT) enables local
hosts on a private IP network to communicate over a public network
such as the Internet.
