Integral to the task of managing IP
traffic is eliminating unwanted traffic while still allowing
appropriate user access to necessary services. Beyond this, some
applications require that broadcast traffic be forwarded across
routers to discover resources and provide initial connectivity.
The Cisco IOSŪ software provides mechanisms for reducing
unwanted traffic, for restricting network use to only authorized
users, and for enabling broadcasts to be forwarded beyond the local
router to the desired server (see the main figure). Access lists
limit traffic and restrict network use, and ip helper addresses
enable broadcast forwarding. Both access lists and ip helper
addresses are covered in this chapter.
