4.3 Configuring OSPF on Routers Within a Single Area
4.3.1 Basic configuration steps
In this section, you will learn how to configure OSPF on routers within a certain area.

To configure OSPF, you must enable OSPF on the router and configure the router's network addresses and area information (see Figure ).

To configure OSPF, perform the following steps:

  1. Enable OSPF on the router using the following configuration:

router(config)#router ospf process-id

process-id is a user defined number to identify multiple OSPF processes running within a single router. The process-id does not need to match process-ids on other routers. Running multiple OSPF processes on the same router is not recommended because it creates multiple database entries that take up unnecessary memory in your router.

  1. Identify IP networks on the router.

For each network, you must identify the area to which the network belongs. The network value can vary in that it can be the network address supported by the router, or the specific interface addresses configured. The router knows how to interpret the address by comparing the address to the wildcard mask. Use the following configuration:

router(config-router)#network address wildcard-mask area area-id
