GNU

GNU stands for "GNU's Not UNIX." The Free Software Foundation provides free software which uses the GNU licensing agreement.

grep

grep searches files for a character pattern and displays all of the lines that contain that pattern. grep uses limited regular expressions (like those used with ed) to match character patterns.

Group

The group identifies the users associated with a file. A user group is a set of users who have access to a common set of files. User groups are defined in the /etc/group file and are granted the same sets of permissions.

Group Owner

The owner of the group has overriding permissions for a set of users who share file resources. Users in the same group can access each others' files based on the group permissions set. Using group permissions is convenient when a group of users is working on the same project and each user needs access to the same files.

groupadd

The groupadd command creates a new group definition on the system by adding the appropriate entry to the /etc/group file.

gzcat

The gzcat command enables you to read a gzipped file without uncompressing it.

gzip

gzip (GNU zip) is a compression utility designed to be a replacement for compress. Its main advantages over compress are much better compression and freedom from patented algorithms. The GNU Project uses it as the standard compression program for its system.
