Backup
- A backup is a copy of file system data that is stored separately from the
disk drive on which the data resides.
Banner
- The banner command is a programmable read-only memory monitor instruction. It identifies system information such as the machine type,
system PROM version number, serial number, Ethernet address, and host
identification number.
Block Device
- A block device is a device, usually a CD-ROM drive or hard disk, that enables
block input/output (I/O) transfers.
Block Special
- A block special file provides access to block devices, such as hard disk and
CD-ROM devices.
boot
- The boot command is used to start the system kernel or a standalone
program.
Boot Block

A boot block is a 15-sector disk block that contains information used during
booting. Block numbers point to the location of the ufsboot program on
the disk. The boot block directly follows the disk label.
Note - The full pathname of the SolarisTM
2.x boot program is /platform/'arch - k'/ufsboot.
Bourne Shell
- The Bourne shell is the default shell for the Solaris computing environment.
It does not have aliasing or history capabilities.
Broadcast Bus
- Ethernet is a local area network (LAN) technology. It is a broadcast network,
meaning that all workstations on the network receive all transmissions. It
employs a bus topology, which means all of the workstations are connected to one
single physical medium.
Browser
- A browser is a graphical program that allows convenient access to the World
Wide Web (WWW). The first browser was Mosaic. Some browsers are Netscape
NavigatorTM, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and HotJavaTM.
BSD
- The Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) is a version of UNIX(R) developed at
the University of California, Berkeley. The SunOS(TM) 4.x environment is
based on BSD.
Bundled
Software
- Software applications that are included in the SolarisTM
2.x release are called bundled software.
