Lab
3.1.4: Configuring PPP interactive mode and assign a peer default
address
Objectives:
Allow users to run either EXEC or PPP depending on their
preference.
Scenario:
The CTO of the Atlanta Bread Company has just called you. She is
asking why can't she start an EXEC session on the core router
through a dialup connection. She would also like to dialin for free
Internet access. You will configure the core router to permit PPP
and EXEC sessions.
Notes:
Lab Tasks:
Log into the Atlanta router and enter global configuration mode.
Configure the serial interface for both EXEC and PPP async
operation. The commands to configure the serial interface are :
Atlanta(config)#interface serial 0/1
Atlanta(config-if)#no async mode dedicated
Atlanta(config-if)#async mode interactive
Atlanta(config-if)#peer default ip address 10.1.1.2
Below is a brief description of each of the above commands.
No async mode dedicated
Removes the PPP only feature
Async mode interactive
Allows both EXEC and PPP
Peer default IP address
Automatically assigns an IP address to a host
The next step is to configure the router to begin a PPP session if the remote node begins sending PPP frames. The
command to do this is:
From the Macon router issue the following command:
Macon#ping 172.16.0.1
Record your findings below:
Once the modems connect, issue the command 'Show
Dialer" and record
your results below:
Leave the router alone for five minutes and see if the async
connection drops
From Macon, Reverse telnet to the modem on line 2 and manually
dial the modem to the Atlanta core router. To do this issue the
follow commands:
Macon#telnet modem2
Enter the Cisco Password
Type"ATDT555600X" (X represents the port number on the Atlas
550)
Once the routers connect press the "Enter" key. Did the
Atlanta core router display the following prompt?
CONNECT 33600 V42bis
User Access Verification
Password:
After completing step 8, configure a workstation to dial the
Atlanta Router using dialup networking. Do not use a username and
use "cisco" as the password. After the connection
is made, issue the "
winipcfg"
command in Windows. What IP address were you assigned?
Save your configurations for use in the next lab.
Congratulations! You now have a PPP dialin connection from the
Macon office to the Atlanta office, a PPP server for the CTO, and
out-of-band management of the Atlanta core router.
