10.1.1 Managing IP traffic
Integral to the task of managing IP traffic is eliminating unwanted traffic while still allowing appropriate user access to necessary services. Beyond this, some applications require that broadcast traffic be forwarded across routers to discover resources and provide initial connectivity.

The Cisco IOSŪ software provides mechanisms for reducing unwanted traffic, for restricting network use to only authorized users, and for enabling broadcasts to be forwarded beyond the local router to the desired server (see the main figure). Access lists limit traffic and restrict network use, and ip helper addresses enable broadcast forwarding. Both access lists and ip helper addresses are covered in this chapter.
