B.3.8 DHCP server configuration
Example shows the required commands to configure a Cisco 700 series router as a DHCP server, as shown in Figure .

Table contains command descriptions for the configuration in Example .
Some points to remember when configuring the DHCP server follow:

  • When the DHCP server is initialized, default addresses are used if no existing LAN or internal addresses exist. If a manually configured LAN or internal address exists, the router defines the default gateway, netmask, and DHCP address pool based on this address. If neither exists, it uses the default settings of 10.0.0.1 as the LAN IP address, 255.0.0.0 as the subnet mask, 10.0.0.2 as the starting DHCP client address, and 10.0.0.1 (the LAN interface address) as the primary gateway address.
  • Unlike DHCP relay, DHCP server and IPCP will not automatically initiate a call, even if AUTO is OFF.
  • In order for the DHCP server parameters to be automatically generated and used based on the LAN or internal IP address, each DHCP parameter must be set to 0 or to none.
  • To reset the DHCP server configuration, each value must be reset by using the reset command.

Lab Activity
Configure the Cisco 700 series router to dial an IOS router using PPP encapsulation and authenticate with CHAP. Then configure the DHCP server with a pool of 50 addresses.
