| This chapter deals with one of the most
important areas of network security and support: Backing up and
restoring data. Backups are another key component in a comprehensive
security plan. We will cover the most common network and workstation
backup strategies and then introduce the built-in UNIX backup
utilities. In order to back up or easily transfer files via ftp or
another method, you need to be able to package and restore the files
easily. In this chapter, you will work with the Tape Archive (tar)
and Java Archive (jar)
utilities to perform backups of data as well as restoring data from
backups. We will also cover the UNIX file compression utility and the
use of File Manager to perform basic backup tasks. In addition,
specific instructions for backing up and restoring your home directory
using
tar
and
compress
are included.
