1.4 The Solaris Operating Environment
1.4.1 Overview
The operating system environment on Sun systems is called the Solaris Operating Environment. The Solaris environment consists of the SunOS 5.x Operating System, the Open Network Computing (ONC) protocols, and a Graphical User Interface (GUI). SunOS 5.x is a multiuser, multitasking network operating system that is based on the standard SVR4 UNIX operating system. ONC is a family of published networking protocols and distributed services that enable remote resource sharing among other things. The Solaris environment supports two graphical interfaces: Common Desktop Environment (CDE) and Open Windows.
